Our most frequently asked questions for Shop Shelving

What's the difference between wall shelving and gondola shelving?
Wall shelving is fixed against a wall with a single-sided display face, while gondola shelving is free-standing and double-sided so shoppers can browse from both sides. Wall units typically use a wall starter bay, gondola runs use starter and extension bays. Both use the same shelf and bracket system, so ranges can usually be matched throughout a shop.
Can I mix wall bays and gondola bays in the same run?
Yes, provided the bays are from the same range and height. Wall, gondola and end bays generally share the same upright and bracket system, so a wall run can be extended into a gondola run and vice versa. Check bay depth and finish match before ordering, as this can vary between ranges. Ask us to confirm compatibility for your setup.
How deep are the base and upper shelves?
It varies by range, but most gondola shelving has a deeper base shelf than the upper shelves, giving stability and more room for bulkier stock lower down. Upper shelves are usually shallower to keep sightlines open across the shop floor. Exact depths depend on the bay width and height chosen, so tell us your requirements and we'll confirm.
Can end bays be added to an existing gondola run?
Generally yes. Promotional end bays are designed to fix onto the end of an existing gondola run using the same upright system, turning it into a feature display point. Some older installations need an adaptor bracket to join existing stock to new bays. Send us photos or a model reference and we'll check the fit before you order.
How much weight can shop shelving hold?
Weight loading depends on the shelf gauge, bracket type and bay height, so it varies across ranges. As a rule, base shelves are built to carry heavier loads than upper shelves, which is why heavier stock is usually kept lower down. If you're planning a specific load, tell us the items and weights and we'll recommend a suitable range.
Is shop shelving self-assembly or does it need fitting?
Most shop shelving is designed for self-assembly using basic tools, with uprights, shelves and brackets that slot together without specialist fixings. Larger gondola runs, or wall fixing into masonry, may need two people and a drill. Instructions are supplied with each order, and we're happy to talk through installation before you buy if you're unsure.
Do you hold shelving in stock or is it made to order?
It depends on the range. Some standard bays, shelves and finishes are held in stock for quick dispatch, while other sizes, colours or configurations are made to order and take longer, particularly for larger projects. If timing matters, let us know your deadline and we'll confirm what's available and what needs to be produced.
