Our most frequently asked questions for Removable & Telescopic Bollards
What's the difference between removable and telescopic bollards?
Removable bollards lift completely out of a ground socket to allow vehicle access, then drop back in and lock when access needs restricting again. Telescopic bollards stay fixed in their socket but collapse down or retract into it, so they're never fully detached. Both suit similar applications, and the choice often comes down to how often access is needed and whether losing a loose post is a concern.
How do removable bollards work?
Removable bollards sit in a ground-mounted socket that's fixed into the surface, with the post itself lifting free once unlocked. When access isn't needed, the post is dropped back into the socket and secured, usually with a lock built into the post or socket cover. A spring-loaded flap or cover cap over the empty socket is common to keep it clear of debris.
Are telescopic bollards suitable for heavy traffic areas?
Telescopic bollards are generally aimed at moderate rather than heavy vehicle traffic, since the retracting mechanism is designed for controlled, repeated use rather than impact resistance. For areas needing frequent access alongside genuine vehicle protection, a crash-tested option may be more appropriate. Tell us about your access frequency and risk level and we can suggest the right product.
Can removable bollards be locked?
Yes, removable bollards are almost always designed with a locking mechanism, either integral to the post or via a padlock through the socket collar. This keeps the bollard secure against unauthorised removal while allowing authorised users to lift it out when access is needed. Keyed-alike options are available where multiple bollards need to share one key.
What socket is needed for a removable bollard?
Removable bollards need a ground socket set into a concrete foundation, matched in diameter and depth to the specific bollard model. The socket usually includes a locking collar and a cover to protect it from grit and standing water when the bollard is lifted out. Correct installation of the socket is important for the bollard to sit securely.
Can removable bollards be keyed alike?
Yes, many removable bollard ranges offer a keyed-alike option so one key operates several posts across a site, which is useful for larger car parks or multiple access points. Individually keyed locks are also available where separate control is preferred. Let us know your site setup and we can advise on the best locking arrangement.
Do removable bollards need a lockable cover for the empty socket?
A socket cover is recommended once the bollard is removed, both to stop debris and water collecting in the void and to reduce a trip hazard for pedestrians. Most removable bollard systems include a fitted cap or flap for this purpose. Checking the cover is fitted correctly after each removal helps keep the socket working smoothly.
