Our most frequently asked questions for Entrance & Checkout Gates
What is a checkout gate?
A checkout gate is the chrome swing barrier you see at the end of a supermarket till run, with a blue exit arrow on one side and a red no-entry on the other. It lets customers leave through the manned till area while stopping them coming back in the wrong way. Ours can be fitted permanently and set for one-way or bi-directional swing.
What is the difference between a standard checkout gate and a full-depth swing gate?
A standard checkout gate is a single chrome barrier arm that swings at around waist height to control direction. A full-depth swing gate is taller and fuller, giving better visibility of the exit and more of a physical barrier, which suits busier stores and higher footfall. Both come as one-way or bi-directional and both can be locked when not in use.
Can entrance and checkout gates be locked?
Yes. Our full-depth and alarmed gates can be locked closed when a till or exit is unmanned, so customers are guided to an open, staffed lane. The simple standard barriers are there mainly to control direction rather than to lock, so choose a full-depth or alarmed gate if secure closure matters to you.
What is an alarmed security gate?
An alarmed security gate works like our standard and full-depth checkout gates but has a built-in alarm that sounds if someone tries to use it while it is locked. It is popular in stores with several entrances or exits where staff cannot watch every point, adding a layer of loss prevention without needing a full turnstile.
Should I choose a one-way or bi-directional gate?
One-way gates guide people in a single flow, for example out through the till. Bi-directional gates swing both ways, which suits an opening that needs to work as both an entrance and an exit, or an aisle that changes use through the day. Tell us the layout and we will point you to the right one.
Are these gates suitable for wheelchairs and trolleys?
Full-depth swing gates and wider openings are the better choice where wheelchair, pushchair or trolley access is needed, as they give more clearance than a standard narrow barrier. If accessibility is a requirement, ask us for the clear opening width of each model before you order.
What are entrance and checkout gates made from?
Our entrance and checkout gates are made from strong chrome-finished or powder-coated steel tube, built to take constant public use and to comply with the relevant UK standards. They are designed to be fixed securely to the floor and to stay reliable through years of daily swinging.
