What is the difference between a convex mirror and a traffic mirror?
Convex mirror and traffic mirror are generally used to describe the same product: a curved mirror that widens the field of view around blind corners. Traffic mirror tends to describe larger, road-rated units for vehicle junctions and car parks, while convex mirror covers the full range including smaller indoor warehouse and aisle mirrors. Sizing is driven by viewing distance rather than the name.
What size convex mirror do I need for my car park or aisle?
Mirror size should be matched to viewing distance: smaller mirrors, around 300 to 450mm, suit indoor aisles and short corridors, while larger mirrors, 600mm and above, are needed for car park junctions and longer external viewing distances. As a general guide, larger diameters give a wider field of view over greater distances. Tell us the distance and location and we can recommend a size.
How does a walk-through metal detector work?
A walk-through metal detector uses electromagnetic field sensors built into the arch to detect metallic objects carried through it, alerting with a visual and audible signal when a threshold is triggered. Sensitivity is adjustable to distinguish between small items, such as keys, and larger security concerns. Multi-zone models can also indicate roughly where on the body the item was detected.
Do walk-through metal detectors need calibrating for a specific site?
Yes, walk-through metal detectors are usually calibrated on installation to suit the site environment, as nearby metal structures, flooring and electrical interference can all affect sensitivity. Sensitivity thresholds are also set according to what the operator needs to detect. Periodic recalibration or checks are recommended, particularly after the unit is moved or its surroundings change.
Are security mirrors suitable for outdoor use?
Many convex and traffic mirrors are made for outdoor use, using acrylic or polycarbonate lenses with weatherproof housings and UV-stable materials, but specification varies by product. Outdoor mirrors need to withstand temperature changes, rain and, in some cases, vandalism, so check the housing material and mounting before fitting to an external wall or post.
What power supply do walk-through metal detectors need?
Power comes from a standard mains supply on most walk-through metal detectors, with some models offering battery backup for locations without a fixed electrical point. Power requirements vary by manufacturer and model, so check the specification against your site setup, particularly for temporary or outdoor installations.
Can convex mirrors be used indoors as well as outdoors?
Yes, convex mirrors are widely used indoors in warehouses, corridors and retail aisles to improve visibility around blind corners, as well as outdoors at vehicle junctions and car park exits.
