Our most frequently asked questions for Workwear & PPE

What does EN ISO 20345 mean on safety footwear?
EN ISO 20345 is the European standard covering safety footwear with a protective toecap, setting minimum requirements for impact and compression resistance, among other properties. Footwear meeting this standard is tested to protect against a specified impact energy and crush load at the toe. Look for the EN ISO 20345 marking alongside the specific classification, such as S1 or S3, on the footwear.
What is the difference between S1, S3 and other safety footwear ratings?
These letter classifications indicate additional protection on top of the base EN ISO 20345 toecap standard. S1 covers antistatic, fuel-resistant, closed-heel footwear for dry environments, while S3 adds penetration-resistant midsoles and water resistance, making it suited to outdoor or wet sites. Choose the rating that matches the hazards on site rather than assuming higher always means better fit for purpose.
How should I choose the right size in safety boots or workwear?
Sizing varies between brands and styles, so check the manufacturer's size chart rather than relying on your usual shoe or clothing size alone. Safety footwear should allow room for work socks without being loose, and workwear should permit a full range of movement without excess bulk. If you are ordering for a team, ask us about sizing samples before a bulk order.
Is hi-vis workwear the same as flame-resistant workwear?
No, these are separate properties and a garment needs to be specifically tested and certified for each. High-visibility workwear is tested against a standard covering fluorescent material and reflective tape visibility, while flame-resistant workwear is separately tested for how it behaves near heat or flame. Some garments combine both certifications, but check the label rather than assuming.
What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant outerwear?
Waterproof outerwear is tested and rated to keep water out under sustained exposure, typically using a taped-seam, membrane construction, while water-resistant garments only repel light moisture, such as drizzle, before wetting through. For prolonged outdoor work in wet conditions, waterproof-rated jackets and trousers are the more reliable choice. Check the garment's water column rating if this matters for your use.
Do safety trousers need to meet a specific standard?
Standard safety trousers do not always carry a specific certification unless they include additional protective features, such as cut resistance, chainsaw protection or high-visibility material, each covered by its own relevant EN standard. General workwear trousers are assessed on durability and fit rather than a formal PPE standard. Tell us the hazard you need to cover and we can point to a certified option.
How often should PPE be replaced?
Replacement intervals depend on the item, how often it is worn and the conditions it is exposed to, so there is no single fixed schedule. Safety footwear and protective clothing should be checked regularly for wear, damage or reduced protective performance, and replaced as soon as it no longer meets its original standard. Follow the manufacturer's guidance for the specific product.
