What is the difference between a wall buffer and a barrier rail?
A wall buffer is a fixed, often continuous strip mounted directly to a wall to absorb impact from trolleys, pallets or vehicles at a set height. A barrier rail is typically a standalone or floor-mounted rail set away from the wall, offering a physical stand-off zone as well as impact absorption. Which you need depends on the traffic type and available floor space.
What are Black Bull barriers made from?
Black Bull barriers are made from durable polymer or reinforced plastic sections mounted on steel or polymer posts, designed to flex and absorb impact rather than crack like rigid materials. This construction resists denting and scuffing from forklifts, pallet trucks and trolleys far better than painted steel rail. Colour options usually include high-visibility yellow and black for clear demarcation.
Do column guards need to be fixed to the floor or the column?
Most column guards are fitted directly around the column using screws, adhesive or a wraparound clamping system, rather than fixing to the floor. Some heavier-duty designs include a floor-fixed base for extra stability against repeated forklift contact. The right fixing method depends on the column material and the level of impact expected, so check before ordering.
Can impact protection products be used outdoors as well as indoors?
Many impact and surface protection products are suitable for outdoor use, but this depends on the material and any UV or weather resistance rating. Polymer barriers and guards generally cope well outdoors, while some finishes are intended for indoor warehouse or retail settings only. Check the product specification, or ask us, before specifying for an external location.
What height should wall and door protection be fitted at?
Fitting height depends on what is causing the impact: trolley and pallet truck protection is typically fitted lower, around bumper height, while door protection needs to cover the full swing zone plus a margin either side. There is no single fixed height for every site, so it is worth measuring your actual traffic before ordering.
Are corner guards suitable for forklift traffic?
Standard corner guards suit pedestrian, trolley and light vehicle traffic, but forklift-heavy areas need a heavier-duty guard rated for repeated, higher-force impact. Lightweight guards can crack or come loose under sustained forklift contact. Tell us about the vehicle types and frequency of use on site and we can recommend a guard built for that level of traffic.
How are impact protection products cleaned and maintained?
Most impact protection products need only routine wiping down with warm water and a mild detergent, as the polymer and plastic materials used resist staining and do not require repainting. Check fixings periodically for looseness after heavy impacts, and replace any cracked or badly scuffed sections promptly to maintain effective protection.
