Our most frequently asked questions for Arm & Swing Barrier Gates
What's the difference between an arm barrier and a swing gate?
An arm barrier uses a horizontal boom that lifts to allow vehicles through, making it a compact solution for narrow entrances, while a swing gate opens outward or inward on hinges like a conventional gate and gives full-width clearance. Arm barriers suit high-traffic car parks, whereas swing gates are often preferred where full closure or wider vehicles are involved.
Are your barrier arms manual or automatic?
Both manual and automatic arm barriers are available. Manual barriers are raised and lowered by hand and suit lower-traffic sites, while automatic barriers are motorised and typically controlled by a keypad, fob, intercom or integration with access control. The right choice depends on traffic volume and how much staff involvement you want.
What power supply does an automatic arm barrier need?
Automatic arm barriers generally require a mains electrical supply run to the barrier location, and cabling needs to be installed by a qualified electrician as part of the setup. Solar-powered options exist for sites without easy mains access. Let us know your site conditions and we can advise on the most suitable option.
Can swing gates be fitted with access control (keypad, fob)?
Yes, swing gates can be specified with automation and linked to access control such as keypads, fobs, intercoms or vehicle recognition systems. This is usually arranged at the point of order so the gate, motor and control system are matched correctly. Tell us how you want the gate operated and we'll confirm compatible options.
How wide can a swing gate opening be?
Opening widths vary considerably depending on the gate range and whether it's a single or double-leaf design, with double gates generally able to span wider openings than a single leaf. The maximum practical width also depends on the gate's weight and automation, if fitted. Send us your opening dimensions and we'll confirm what's achievable.
Do you install arm barriers and swing gates, or supply only?
This depends on the product and your location, as some ranges are supply-only while others can include installation, particularly for automated barriers and gates that need electrical work and groundworks. It's worth confirming installation availability with us before ordering, especially for automatic systems.
What finish do arm barriers come in?
Arm barrier housings are typically galvanised or powder coated, often finished in a high-visibility colour such as yellow, red or black and white striping to aid visibility, with the boom itself commonly striped for daytime and reflective visibility. Custom colours to match a corporate scheme or site branding are usually available on request.
