Canopies & School Shelters

What's the difference between a canopy and a school shelter?

A canopy is generally a linear or entrance structure providing cover along a route, such as a walkway between buildings, while a school shelter is a standalone unit for pupils to wait, sit or shelter during breaks. Canopies are often fixed to a building, whereas shelters tend to be freestanding.

Do walkway canopies need planning permission?

Often not, as many canopies fall under permitted development, but this depends on size, height and whether the canopy is attached to a listed building or within a conservation area. School and commercial sites sometimes require consent as part of a wider scheme, so check with your local authority before ordering.

Are school shelters designed to withstand heavy use?

Yes, school shelters are built with robust galvanised steel frames and durable roofing to cope with daily use by large numbers of pupils, including knocks and weather exposure. Anti-climb design features and rounded edges are common on models intended for playgrounds, and finishes are chosen for low maintenance over time.

What roofing materials are used on canopies?

Common options include polycarbonate for daylight transmission, box profile steel for full weather protection, and glass reinforced plastic on some higher-specification designs. Choice depends on how much natural light you want beneath the canopy versus maximum protection from rain. We can talk through the trade-offs for your site.

Are canopies and school shelters supplied self-assembly or installed?

Both options are available depending on the structure and site. Smaller shelters are often supplied as a self-assembly kit, while larger canopies, particularly those fixed to an existing building, are more commonly installed by a contractor due to structural fixing requirements. Ask us which suits your project when enquiring.

Can canopies be joined together to cover longer walkways?

Yes, modular canopy bays can typically be linked end to end to cover longer routes between buildings, such as school corridors or car park to entrance walkways. This lets you extend coverage in stages as budget allows, rather than having to specify the full run in one order.

Are school shelters available with seating?

Yes, many school shelter designs can be specified with integral timber or steel bench seating along one or more sides, useful for waiting areas or playground breakout spaces. Seating layout and capacity vary by model, so let us know expected pupil numbers and we'll suggest a suitable configuration.
