Smoking Shelters

Do smoking shelters need to be open-sided under UK law?

Yes, under smoke-free legislation a shelter must not be more than 50 percent enclosed to be classed as outdoors and exempt from indoor smoking rules. This generally means at least two sides open to the elements. We design our shelters to meet this requirement, but the final compliance check rests with the site operator.

Is planning permission needed for a smoking shelter?

Usually not for a standard freestanding shelter, as most fall within permitted development limits, but this depends on size, siting and whether the building is listed. Shelters attached to a licensed premises can sometimes attract additional scrutiny. Check with your local planning authority before installation if you're at all unsure.

What materials are smoking shelters made from?

Frames are typically galvanised or powder coated steel or aluminium, chosen for durability against weather and frequent use. Roofing is commonly polycarbonate for light transmission or a solid box profile roof for better weather protection. Cladding can be added to the sides for extra shelter from wind and rain.

Can smoking shelters be used for vaping too?

Yes, the same open-sided shelters are commonly used for both smoking and vaping, and many sites simply designate one area for both. There's no separate legal structure required for vaping under current rules, though some organisations choose to signpost shelters clearly for whichever use their site policy specifies.

Are smoking shelters self-assembly?

Most smoking shelters are supplied as a self-assembly kit with fixings and instructions, suiting sites that want to install using their own maintenance team or contractor. Installation can also be arranged if preferred. Let us know which you'd rather have when placing your order, as it can affect lead time.

What sizes do smoking shelters come in?

Sizes range from compact single-bay units suitable for a handful of staff to larger multi-bay shelters for busier sites. The right size depends on expected user numbers and available space. Get in touch with your site details and we can recommend a suitable model rather than guessing at capacity.

Can smoking shelters include lighting or ashtrays?

Yes, shelters can be specified with integral lighting for use after dark and wall-mounted ashtrays or cigarette bins as an add-on. Some sites also add signage panels. Extras vary by model, so let us know what you need at enquiry stage and we'll confirm what can be included.
