Cycle Shelters

What is the difference between a cycle shelter and a cycle compound?

A cycle shelter is an open-sided or part-clad structure that gives bikes cover from the weather, while a compound adds full perimeter fencing and a lockable gate for secure, controlled access. Many sites start with a basic shelter and add compound fencing later. Which you need depends on footfall, site security and whether cycles are left overnight.

Do cycle shelters need planning permission?

Often not, as most cycle shelters fall under permitted development, but this depends on the site, its size and location. Listed buildings, conservation areas and larger structures are more likely to need consent. Check with your local planning authority before ordering, and ask us if you'd like drawings to support an application.

Are cycle shelters supplied self-assembly or installed?

Both options are available. Shelters can be delivered as a self-assembly kit with fixings and instructions for your own contractor, or we can arrange installation. Self-assembly suits sites with in-house maintenance teams, while installed options are useful where groundworks or a concrete base are also needed. Let us know your preference when ordering.

What materials are cycle shelters made from?

Frames are typically galvanised steel or aluminium, with roofing in polycarbonate, box profile steel or timber depending on the model. Hot-dip galvanised steel gives long-term corrosion resistance for outdoor sites, and frames can usually be RAL powder coated to match corporate or council colours. Roofing choice affects light transmission and cost.

Can cycle shelters be built to meet BREEAM requirements?

Yes, cycle shelters can be specified to support BREEAM credits, which typically require covered, secure and well-located cycle parking with capacity linked to building occupancy. We can advise on stand spacing, security features and shelter type to help meet the relevant criteria, but the assessment itself is carried out by your BREEAM assessor.

Are cycle shelters made to order or held in stock?

Most cycle shelters are made to order, since size, cladding and finish are specified to suit each site. Some standard models may be available from stock. Lead times vary depending on specification and current order volumes, so it's worth getting in touch with your requirements before committing to a completion date.

Can cycle shelters be fitted with gates or secure access?

Yes, shelters can be specified with lockable gates, mesh side panels or full compound fencing for added security. Options range from a simple padlocked gate to fob-controlled access on larger compounds. Tell us how many cycles you need to accommodate and your security requirements and we'll recommend a suitable specification.
