Our Sight Gap Pedestrian Guardrails are the UK's most widely specified steel guardrail, lining pavements, car parks, and public spaces across the country. Manufactured to BS 7818 and hot dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461:2009, these guardrails deliver long-term corrosion resistance and structural integrity with minimal maintenance.

Available in 1m, 1.5m, and 2m panel widths, each panel features an open visibility gap — improving sightlines for pedestrians and drivers alike. Choose from root fixed (integral legs) or surface mounted (base plate) fixing options to suit your installation requirements.

Panels can be supplied hot dip galvanised or galvanised and powder coated in a range of colours to meet site specifications or local authority requirements.

What's the difference between pedestrian guardrail and safety barrier?

Pedestrian guardrail is designed to direct foot traffic and keep people away from hazards such as road edges, while safety barriers are generally heavier-duty and intended to withstand impact or contain a specific risk. Both are typically supplied as galvanised or powder-coated steel panels. If you're unsure which suits your site, tell us the application and we'll advise on the right range.

What are pedestrian guardrails made from?

Most guardrail panels are fabricated from mild steel tube, finished either hot-dip galvanised for corrosion resistance or powder coated to a RAL colour for a decorative finish. Some ranges combine both, galvanised as standard with a powder-coated top coat. Panel gauge and tube diameter vary by range, so ask us for the specification that suits your footfall and location.

Do guardrails need to be galvanised?

Galvanising isn't compulsory but it's strongly recommended for anything used outdoors. Hot-dip galvanising protects the steel from rust and typically outlasts paint alone, particularly in exposed or coastal locations. Indoor or low-exposure sites can often use powder coating without galvanising underneath, though this depends on the environment, so let us know your setting before ordering.

Can guardrail panels be powder coated in a specific colour?

Yes, guardrail panels can generally be powder coated to any RAL colour, including corporate or site-specific schemes such as safety yellow or black and white hazard banding. Powder coating is usually applied over a galvanised base for durability. Lead times and minimum quantities for bespoke colours vary, so check with us before placing an order.

Are your barriers bolt-down or freestanding?

Both fixing methods are available depending on the range. Bolt-down guardrail is fixed to a hard surface such as concrete or tarmac using base plates and anchors, giving a permanent, stable installation, while freestanding barriers use weighted feet and can be repositioned as needed. Tell us your surface type and whether the layout is permanent or temporary.

What standard do pedestrian guardrails need to meet?

There isn't one blanket standard covering all guardrail, as requirements depend on the application, for example pedestrian guarding near roads is often specified with reference to highways guidance while other sites follow general workplace safety requirements. We can point you towards the relevant specification once we know where and how the barrier will be used.

Can guardrails be made to a custom length or height?

Custom lengths, heights and end configurations are commonly available alongside standard stock sizes, particularly on made-to-order ranges. This is useful where a run needs to fit an exact boundary or match an existing installation. Bespoke sizing typically takes longer to produce than stock items, so factor this into your ordering timeline.
