Do ESL labels need a Wi-Fi connection or a gateway?

Yes, ESL labels communicate through a dedicated gateway rather than standard Wi-Fi. The gateway sits on your network and pushes price updates to labels using a low-power wireless protocol, keeping the system separate from customer or office Wi-Fi traffic. Gateway coverage and label count needed will depend on store size and shelf layout, so ask us for guidance on your site.

How long does the battery last on an electronic shelf label?

Battery life varies by label size, update frequency and screen refresh settings, typically running into several years rather than months. E-paper only draws power when the display changes, not to hold a static image, which is why ESL batteries last far longer than a standard battery-powered device. We can talk through expected battery life for your specific update pattern.

Can ESL labels display more than just price?

Most electronic shelf labels can show additional information alongside price, such as barcodes, QR codes, promotional flags, stock indicators or product codes. Some models support colour highlights, such as red or yellow, to flag offers at a glance. The exact layout and data fields depend on the label size and the software driving your ESL system.
