Our most frequently asked questions for Turnstiles & Access Control
What types of turnstiles do you supply?
Options generally include full-height turnstiles for secure outdoor perimeters, waist-height tripod turnstiles for controlled but lower-security entry, and gate-style swing or drop-arm barriers for wider or accessible openings. Each suits a different balance of security, throughput and accessibility, so tell us about your entrance and expected footfall and we'll suggest a suitable type.
Are turnstiles suitable for wheelchair access?
Standard tripod and full-height turnstiles are not generally wheelchair accessible, so sites usually pair them with a separate wide access gate to meet accessibility requirements. This gate can often be manually operated or linked to the same access control system. We can advise on accessible options to run alongside your main turnstile.
Can turnstiles be linked to access control systems?
Yes, turnstiles are commonly integrated with access control such as card or fob readers, keypads, ticketing systems or biometric readers, allowing entry to be monitored and restricted. Integration is usually confirmed at the point of order so the turnstile and control equipment are compatible. Let us know your existing system, if any.
What's the difference between a turnstile and a swing gate for entry control?
A turnstile physically limits passage to one person at a time through a rotating or tripod mechanism, giving stronger control over entry, while a swing gate simply opens and closes an opening and relies on the access control system, rather than the gate itself, to manage who passes through. Turnstiles suit higher-security or high-footfall sites.
Are turnstiles suitable for outdoor use?
Many turnstiles are designed for outdoor use and finished in galvanised steel or weather-resistant coatings to withstand the elements, though some models are intended for indoor or covered locations only. Check the specification of the particular range before ordering if the turnstile will be fully exposed to weather.
What materials are turnstiles made from?
Turnstiles are typically constructed from steel, often stainless steel for the mechanism and galvanised or powder-coated steel for the frame and housing, chosen for durability under frequent use. The finish selected usually depends on the setting, with stainless steel favoured for a higher-specification or more visible entrance.
Can turnstiles be fitted with card/fob readers as standard?
Card and fob readers aren't usually fitted as standard and are typically specified as an optional extra or supplied by a separate access control installer. Some turnstiles are supplied pre-wired to accept third-party readers. Confirm with us whether you need the turnstile only or a complete access-controlled package.
